Hi Lucanorum olim pastores fuêre, qui, excussô servitutis iugô, trans Laum fluv. sedes posuerunt, unde et Βρέντιοι, vel Βρέττιοι a Lucanis dicti sunt, quod illorum linguâ fugitivos sonat. A' Romanis autem Brutii appellati sunt, quasi Bruti, h. e. stupidi et vecordes; quâ ignominiâ ideo notati sunt; quod, secundi belli Punici tempore, ad Annibalem descivissent; ob quam perfidiam semper deinde fine honore et dignitate habiti sunt, ad servilia tantum opera, et viliora munia designati.
